Half way between the Space Hulk music and, weirdly, Bright Eyes (specifically the line 'Or is it a dream'), this could reasonably be titled KILLER MUTANT RABBITS IN SPACE. In fact, dude, that's a way better title. You can have that for free.

OK I've been light on the blog lately, I've got a new job which I actually have to try to do which is good for my general wellbeing but means my blogging duties have taken a hit. I couldn't let this one pass without a quick post though, Generation Bass' first long player is out today and it's one I've been chomping at the bit to get hold of for a looong time. Filled with futuristic theatricality, Lord Cry Cry combines dubstep sensibility with jazz experimentation and blues growl and sticks the lot through a sinister circus filter. Oh and the hallmark of all truly great music: it reminds me of Monkey Island (specifically, Dance of the Moores. Makes me think of the final battle with LeChuck at the end of MI2. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you don't know good music). But actually words can't do it justice (at least not ones I can think of at this time of night) so just check it out (and buy it, obviously):

BROKEN DUB: Incredibly appropriate name for this free EP of glitched out dubtronics released by Modisti netlabel. The tunes are pleasingly short, in fact the whole seven tracks are over within 15 minutes, which is a good thing sometimes: if you've done all you're going to do within two minutes, why drag the track out to seven?
Taking in dub/step, glitch, breakcore and general electronic experimentation along the way, most of the EP is an enjoyable listen but to be perfectly honest, pretty forgettable. It's opening track Disappoinment and closer, Vector Dub, which really make this a release worth checking out - the former being more or less exactly half way between dubstep and Aphex Twin's Richard D James album, and the latter another dubstep based tune which makes incredible use of the way silence can smack you round the face in a beat (see Dr Dre's Some LA Niggaz beat for one of the best examples of this I know)

New from Subdrive, this filthy global rave EP from Curl Up:
curl up - Biomechanical EP by subdrive
Opening the EP on a kuduro beat with hardcore stabs - my ears are officially pricked up - in fact it initially kind of sounds like a tropical Hoover Time*. The tune progresses into more typical old skool hardcore before bringing the 4-4 back. Sick Sad World opens on a fairly innocent UK Funky type beat but those violent cut up vocal stabs let you know something darker may be lurking and sure enough when it kicks in it's a slap in the face with a grimey brick. Recommended.
* - Stimulant DJs - Hoover Time - classic hard house, this was a big tune for me in a past life

Catch me playing this Friday in Birmingham at PST, Digbeth as part of the Espirito Brum festival alongside live performances from Celt Islam & Innamorati plus loads more.... BIGNESSSSS

So excited about this album, coming soon from Generation Bass. I first found this guy about a year ago whilst searching for sea shanties on Soundcloud (as you do. Or at least, as I do - you do as well, right?) and was blown away, it's so rare to find something that's literally like nothing else. There aren't enough adjectives / genres / references to describe what he does (I called him the Tom Waits of dubstep which covers quite a few bases but there's so much more to it than that) so you're just gonna have to check out this lil teaser for now...

This is an epic adventure right here:

Free EP from Simtek on a bassline / 4-4 garage / dubstep ting. The Gash remix made me laugh out loud in the office for the sheer ridiculousness of the drop. Massive. Amazing Larry (there was a dude named Amazing larry in Lee Press-on & the Nails - I'm pretty confident this isn't the same guy, but if it turns out it is, that would be my favourite fact evar) vs Double Oh No remix starts off with a juke feel and descends into ghettotech madness with an offbeat bassline. Check it out, the price is right...
