Out this week, the latest installment in the Generation Bass moombah EP series, this time from Balkan electro kings Shazalakazoo. Balkan music is a natural bedfellow for Moombahton - Balkan club tunes have been hovering around 100bpm dembow territory for years. Shazalakazoo are the perfect guys to push the combination forward - as a pair they've been at the forefront of electronic Balkan music for the last 5 years or so, without relying on the same tired old brass samples, and of course on his own Neki Stranac, one half of Shazalakazoo, is one of the biggest names in the Moombahton scene.

With this EP Shazalakazoo bring us 4 solid original moombalkan bangers. Title track Bang! deftly twists Balkan brass into Dutch pitchbending, and is probably the stand out tune of the set. Balkan sounds aren't all that's thrown into the Moombah mix here though; MC Gi lends some Baile Funk style vocals to Danca Do Facao, whilst Neki's Tune follows a more straight up Moombahton template. Rojo Rubi, with vocals from MishMish, sticks fairly close to a pre-Moombah Balkan sound - this is basically vintage Shazalakazoo, with a few extra synth stabs & pitch bends thrown in - an excellent vehicle to take you from the Balkans to Moombahland.

On remix duties: SaBBo puts Danca Do Facao through his Deepaton filter (grab this one below) and Bert On Beats pitches Bang! up into Kuduro territory to fairly devastating effect.

New mix from myself, some mostly Balkan Beats, trying to avoid too many of the usual suspects, with a fair few quick semi-live edits & mashups in there...

Dolomites releases this amazing EP of super sexy Gyptune heaters on 19th Sept from If The Kids records. I'm getting strong Monkey Island vibes here, especially from Queen of the Game and In Mid-Flight 723 (which also has a kind of Star Wars-y last 5 seconds... Lucasfilm references abound). None of these are particularly club bangers - though Full Blown has that sexy Balkan dembow which could definitely set a dancefloor off if you picked your moment - but this is really well crafted stuff and makes for a unique, atmospheric listening experience... Just a shame there's not more - hopefully there's an LP in the works.

Heads up for anyone in the South West, some seriously heavyweight balkan club nights going on in Bristol and Falmouth: Skank n Stomp is bringing the Balkan Hotsteppers DJs over from Belgium, to the Croft on Friday and Falmouth Rugby Club on Saturday. It's gonna be massive! I'm gutted that I can't make it due to my life being consumed by boat building (that's not some kind of weird euphemism, as regular readers may be aware I'm actually building - well, restoring - a boat) - the Hotsteppers' AKB vs Beastie Boys mashup was literally a game changer for me:

BLAM. Solid set of remixes too but for me the original just smashes it. Warehouse Bird is a bit more of a DJ tool in comparison but still a very cool slowish wonky rave affair.
