Zifhang - Pentium III 846Mhz EP

Zifhang out of Santiago, Chile - who produced a couple of the beats on Copius' Blind Mans Maze LP - sent me his EP to check out and it's chock full of wicked jazzed up, blazed-out hip hop beats:

LORD CRY CRY - LIVE AT THE CPU - OUT NOW!

OK I've been light on the blog lately, I've got a new job which I actually have to try to do which is good for my general wellbeing but means my blogging duties have taken a hit. I couldn't let this one pass without a quick post though, Generation Bass' first long player is out today and it's one I've been chomping at the bit to get hold of for a looong time. Filled with futuristic theatricality, Lord Cry Cry combines dubstep sensibility with jazz experimentation and blues growl and sticks the lot through a sinister circus filter. Oh and the hallmark of all truly great music: it reminds me of Monkey Island (specifically, Dance of the Moores. Makes me think of the final battle with LeChuck at the end of MI2. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you don't know good music). But actually words can't do it justice (at least not ones I can think of at this time of night) so just check it out (and buy it, obviously):

Lord Cry Cry - Live at the C.P.U.... Album Teaser!

So excited about this album, coming soon from Generation Bass. I first found this guy about a year ago whilst searching for sea shanties on Soundcloud (as you do. Or at least, as I do - you do as well, right?) and was blown away, it's so rare to find something that's literally like nothing else. There aren't enough adjectives / genres / references to describe what he does (I called him the Tom Waits of dubstep which covers quite a few bases but there's so much more to it than that) so you're just gonna have to check out this lil teaser for now...

It's gonna be massive!!

DEUTSCHEJAZZHOP: Tufu & Anthony Drawn

So one of the tunes that really caught my ears on DJMQ's Gorilla Hug mix was Seelenquantisierung by Tufu & Anthony Drawn... excellent news: their album of the same name is available for free from sichtexot.de. Fully of lazy beats & jazzy lines which teeter on the edge of being just too smooth for me, but never quite cross that line. Plus an excellent Deutsche flow from, presumably, either Tufu or Anthony Drawn. Excellent music for gittin high in the sunshine

DJMQ DELIVERS THE GOODS AGAIN...

gorilla hugs dude

Check this new mix from one of my favourite DJs... "Birthday mix for five years of kleinski.de – slow moving house, edgy beats, dope jazz and nice things." - I'd add to that list some crazy epic soundscapes & a smattering of (slightly wonky) Deutscherap which was what first brought djmq to my attention via his Move the Kraut mixtape. Some absolute gems on here.

LORD CRY CRY: the TOM WAITS of DUBSTEP!

I stumbled across this guy in the course of my Soundcloud rummagings a couple of months back and was hyped to post some of his stuff here, but DJ UMB spotted me commenting and asked me to keep it on the down low, since Generation Bass were planning on releasing it and were still finalising whatever it is you need to finalize in these situations. Listen: you don't argue with UMB. So I've been patiently waiting... but now it's been announced on GB I think it's safe to share here too.

So the release is forthcoming on Generation Bass but is still firmly under wraps... so check this mix which gives you an idea of where he's coming from - and also is just a fantastic example of doing something really interesting with a mix - there's big dubstep bangers on there but this isn't like any dubstep mix you've ever heard, throwing jazz, blues, classical into the mix, creating tension with discordance and clashing styles and tempos. If this guy lives up to his current promise, then we really are gonna have a dubstep Tom Waits on our hands...

Its About When it Came Out. Lord Cry Cry live at Transmediale 10 by Lord Cry Cry

Introducing robbiefelixawesome plus an old skool Untimely mix!

So there's probably going to be a whole other dude posting on the blog soon - robbiefelixawesome (or maybe he wants a new name now), the original Untimely collaborator, the one guy who can regularly out-awesome me in terms of new / unexpected / crazy / and, well, untimely sounds... Which I'm excited about, as I think I get a bit too sucked into the whole Ghettotech (whatever that is) thing, which should only be a part of the whole Untimely thing (whatever that is).

Here's our original Untimely mix, back when the full Untimely Skank Sound System name was still in use... no fancy DJ tricks - in fact very little actual mixing at all per se - but this is one of my favourite mixes I've ever recorded. Tune after tune!

Tracklisting after the jump...

Nas, Damian Marley, Mulatu Astatke, Jurassic 5 and andykisaragi in Mongolian Clusterfuck Shocker!

OK the Mongolian clusterfuck thing is a lie. I'm not even sure what qualifies a clusterfuck as Mongolian

Anyway

I made this mashup a couple of years ago...

andykisaragi - jurethiopique (jurassic 5 / Mulatu Astatqé)

...combining a Jurrasic 5 vocal with a Mulatu Astatke tune from the Ethiopiques series of albums - the instrumental was crying out to be hip-hopified, recorded in the 70s (or so) but it could have been a RZA production... well now someone has made a proper beat out of it, and Nas & Damian Marley have lent vocals to it, and man it's pretty awesome, check it out over at the Seen blog: JUNIOR GONG & NAS VERSUS MULATU ASTATKE where you can also download the original...
